Members of Robinson’s
Rangers
Ted Bainbridge, Ph.D.
During the Revolutionary War, Captain Thomas Robinson’s company was a “Ranging Company”, indicating that the unit sometimes operated as an independent command, ranging at will within its extensive assigned area of operations within Northumberland County. At other times the unit functioned as an infantry company which was a subordinate command within a regiment of the Pennsylvania Line of the Continental Army [1].
Different documents list different men in the company at different times. An individual’s name can be spelled different ways in the documents, because in Revolutionary times spelling was not a rigorously conformist task as it is in modern America. When different documents list names with similar spellings, those names might represent the same person or they might represent separate individuals. Discerning which is the case often requires extensive research.
The following roster provides raw data from nineteen sources. Each different spelling is listed separately, leaving it for historians and genealogists to determine which names represent the same individual and which do not. The 658 names on this list probably represent about 354 men.
The third column shows rank, using the following abbreviations: C=Captain, Cl=Corporal, D=Drummer, Dr=Doctor/Surgeon, E=Ensign, F=Fifer, L=Lieutenant, O=Orderly Sergeant, P=Private, S=Sergeant, V=Volunteer. The fourth column shows the source(s) of that name.

D “Alphabetical List of Revolutionary Soldiers 1775-1783”, Pennsylvania Archives, Series 2, Volume 13, pages 1-250. William McGrady is the only man in the Pennsylvania Archives list who is identified with Robinson’s Rangers. Other men in that list have the same name as a man in the unit, or a very similar name, but it is not certain that the person in the Pennsylvania Archives list is the same person as the one listed in the present paper. The Pennsylvania Archives list is only approximately alphabetical, so it is easy to overlook a desired listing; therefore each soldier sought by any researcher should be hunted in this list, whether specifically identified in the present article or not.
