History:

Early settlers in Gallagher Township, in the vicinity of Caldwell and Springer's Corners, were buried in this small burial plot.  It is located not far from the People's Church at Caldwell, which was built on land given by Samuel Swartzin 1897.  The congregation conducted Protestant worship, later affiliating with the Evangelical Church, as early as 1880 in nearby schoolhouses.  Soon after, the land was repossessed by Henry Fritz for non payment of debts, and he used the church as a grain storage area.  It was deeded back to the People's Church on 7 May 1900.  It would appear that this burial ground may have been on the original Swartz or Fritz land.  Many of the early pioneers of Gallagher Township are buried here, and most graves are marked with blank fieldstones.
