History:

Martin and Maria (Ziegler) Long settled on a 205 acre farm in what was then Lamar Township (now Porter Township) prior to 1820.  They purchased the farm from Maria's father, Conrad Ziegler, in 1833, and lived there throughout their lives.  Martin Long was a farmer and also ran a brickyard across the street from his home.  He had two sons, Martin Jr. and Conrad Long.

The farm was sold out of the Long family in 1929 and was owned by John Best. The farm was sold to the Pursley family in 1943.  Hiram Pursley still lives on the property, now owned by his daughter, Barb McElwain.

A cemetery existed behind the house near a present shed.  There were about six to eight interments made in this plot, which used to be behind a row of apple trees.  One of them is thought to be a Mary Long; Martin and Maria (Ziegler) Long are also likely buried here.  At some point the gravestones were removed.  Fragments of them were found in the nearby field, but no pieces substantial enough to yield data were uncovered.
