DEATH OF MAN WHO MADE HIS OWN CASKET

Valentine Cryder A Caldwell Farmer Expires from General Debility.

In the death of Valentine Cryder, which occurred at Caldwell at 3.30 o’clock Thursday afternoon, a well known farmer and an eccentric character passed to the great beyond, leaving sorrowing relatives and a host of friends to mourn his departure.  Mr. Cryder lived in that section of Clinton county nearly all his life and bore the respect of all.  His death was caused by general debility, being 80 years of age, and he had been in failing health for some time.

About 16 years ago Mr. Cryder felled a walnut tree, which he raised for the purpose, and after having it sawed into boards of proper thickness commenced the task of making by hand two handsome caskets, one for himself and the other for his wife, in which he requested each should be buried side by side.  He also set aside on his farm one acre of land where his family were to be buried after their death.

However, some weeks ago he became ill and had succeeded in finishing only one casket except trimmings, and a portion of the other.  It is a beautiful piece of work, perfectly air tight and made of solid walnut.  His wishes in life will be carried out to the letter.

Undertaker E. B. Waters, whose establishment is at No. 30 Bellefonte avenue, this city, took charge of the remains, and supplied a satin lining and silver handles to the uncompleted casket.  Mr. Waters was also directed to complete the remaining portion of the casket for Mr. Cryder’s wife, which he has agreed to do.

Deceased is survived by his wife, two brothers and two sisters.  Funeral services will be conducted at his late home by Rev. William E. Harr, pastor of St. Luke’s Reformed church, at 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon.
