History:

Jacob Burge was born ca. 1800, the son of an earlier Jacob Burge, who originally settled in the area of Wykoff Run in Cameron County.  Jacob Jr., was first married to Maria Wykoff, who died in 1848 and is buried in Jericho Cemetery.   Jacob is known for having kept a tavern known as the "Mad House" about one mile from the mouth of the Sinnemahoning Creek, in the house owned by Caleb Cannon in 1892.  Here he resided as late as 1860.  After the death of his wife, his companion was Susan (Gaines) Smoke, the widow of James Smoke; they had one daughter, Nancy Jane Burge, who married to William J. Buchanan and then to John Lynch.

In Clinton Co Deed Book 78, page 587, on 26 Jun 1909, Jane Lynch, wife of John, of Noyes Twp, deed to John Albert Gaines of Covington Twp, for $125, land which had been conveyed from John Rhone to Jane Lynch in 1879, the same land where Jacob Burge is buried.  Further research is needed to identify the precise location of this land.
